“Pop quiz, kiddo,” Honorée said to Collin. “What’s the key to sneaking out?”

“Stealth,” he answered, tugging the brim of his baseball cap down over his eyes.

“And what’s stealth?”

“Being quick and invisible,” he answered, stumbling slightly over “invisible.”

“That’s right,” Honorée said, raising her hand for a high-five. His palm, moist and sweaty, tapped hers with more force than she expected. All right, she thought. He’s excited. That’s what I wanted, right?

Despite the fact that she knew how much Collin wanted and needed this little escape, she still felt slightly ill at ease. Adrien would be furious if he knew what they were doing, and that made her feel guilty. On the other hand, she knew Adrien would never allow Collin to go outside. Instead, he’d stay strong and stoic as his son self-destructed. He just didn’t understand that not everyone could be as strong as he was.

In twenty minutes, the three of them had donned hats, sunglasses, and dark outerwear. Collin held onto his soccer ball tightly while Julien and Honorée laid out the ground rules between them. At least one of them had to hold Collin’s hand at all times. Julien was carrying his father’s snub-nosed pistol in a side holster underneath his jacket. Although Honorée didn’t have a weapon, she had Julien’s cell phone, so they could call the police at any time.

“And what are we going to watch for?” Julien prompted.

“People following us or people watching us,” Collin answered.

“Awesome,” Honorée said. “I think we’re ready.” She clasped Collin’s hand tightly in hers and stepped across the threshold into the hallway.

Behind her, Julien pulled the door shut tightly and locked it. He moved ahead of them, sauntering downstairs into the vestibule. “Remember the signal,” Honorée said, holding Collin back. “What are we listening for?”

“A whistle,” Collin said, eyes shining with happiness and excitement.

“That’s right.”

Collin leaned forward onto the tips of his toes, straining to hear his grandfather’s signal. A moment later, it came—a clear, high-pitched whistle that meant the coast was clear.

“Let’s go,” Honorée said.

At the door of the apartment building, they exited hand in hand, Collin locked between Honorée and Julien. All three of them stopped once the vestibule door closed behind them, lifting their faces to the crisp morning air.

Honorée looked up at the pale blue sky. White cotton clouds scudded by gently and the whispering breeze felt as soft on her face as Adrien’s fingers. Sunlight dappled the street and the red flowers in the upper story’s flowerboxes. It was a beautiful day to be alive. “Take a deep breath,” Honorée said. “Do you feel it?”

“Feel what?” Collin asked, inhaling as deeply as he could.

“Freedom,” she said softly.

“Let’s go,” Julien prodded gently. “We can’t stay too long in one place.”

Honorée followed the moderate pace he set, headed for the small park three blocks away. She watched his eyes scan the street in front of them as they moved. She used her peripheral vision to scan the side streets, evaluating whether bikers and pedestrians posed a threat.
